The struggle to establish and maintain the rule of law and observance of human rights in emerging African nations: the case of Uganda

3VB and JUSTICE Lecture

 

Chief Justice Emeritus Bart M Katureebe served on the Supreme Court of Uganda for 15 years, the last five as Chief Justice. From the time he left Law School in 1975, he has had varied experiences as a State Attorney, private legal practitioner, Member of Parliament, Minister, Attorney General, Justice of the Supreme Court and Chief Justice. He was also an elected delegate in the Constituent Assembly that debated and passed the 1995 Constitution of Uganda, where he also served as a member of the Legal and Drafting Committee.

 

He has studied, lived, and worked in Uganda all his life and been a witness to some of the difficult periods Uganda has been through. He is very passionate about the administration of justice and the rule of law. Since his retirement as Chief Justice, he has been pursuing his keen interest in Alternative Dispute Resolution and has established a Centre where mediation and arbitration services are offered in Kampala.
