The exhibition delves into the issue of textile waste in Europe and East Africa, starting with discarded clothing collected from the streets of the Netherlands by Jan van Esch and mitumba (second-hand clothing) salvaged from the beaches by Samwel Lazaro. These garments, branded with words and imagery, serve as the foundation for a series of drawings, multimedia works, and performative art interventions.

Through these works, the exhibition seeks to transform these international, one-sided narratives into a dialogue about our shared identity and the reality we inhabit. Alongside the drawings and videos that depict both the collection process and the artists’ reactions, the exhibition will feature an ongoing daily performance. This interactive element invites the public to participate in creating a ten-yard patchwork from waste materials.

[MAONESHO] NENO KUTOKA KWA…na Jan van Esch (NL)

Maonesho haya yanachunguza tatizo la taka za nguo barani Ulaya na Afrika Mashariki, yakianzia na mavazi yaliyotupwa yaliyochukuliwa kutoka mitaa ya Uholanzi na Jan van Esch na mitumba yaliyookotwa kutoka ufukweni na Samwel Lazaro. Mavazi haya, yaliyoandikwa maneno na picha, yanatumika kama msingi wa mfululizo wa michoro, kazi za sanaa za multimedia, na maingiliano ya sanaa ya utendaji.

Kupitia kazi hizi, maonesho yanatafuta kubadilisha simulizi hizi za kimataifa na za upande mmoja kuwa mazungumzo kuhusu utambulisho wetu wa pamoja na hali halisi tunayoishi. Pamoja na michoro na video zinazoonyesha mchakato wa kukusanya na majibu ya wasanii, maonesho yatakuwa na onyesho la kila siku linaloendelea. Kipengele hiki cha maingiliano kinakaribisha umma kushiriki katika kuunda kazi ya patchwork ya yadi kumi kutoka kwa vifaa vya taka.
